About the work
Featured work

The story behind Amona.

I created Amona, the Guardian of Time, with a founder’s story in mind and the journey of building a business. I wanted to express that journey in a piece that could also hold a written account of it.

The stone-like forms, wood texture and plants reflect the challenges, roots and renewal within that story.

Amona · a place for memories

A place to keep a letter.

I added a compartment to hold a letter in the words of the person who lived that journey, so those who come after can learn how it all began.

Portrait of artist Gisa Matos

I am a Brazilian artist living in Charlotte, North Carolina. I have worked with cement, wood and natural stone for more than ten years. I draw inspiration from the shapes of rocks, tree trunks and roots, creating pieces with a rustic medieval style.

My practice began with large-scale work and now extends to wall pieces and sculptural objects. I am interested in the relationship between materials, time and the stories a work can hold.

Practice

Relief, modeling and hand-painted surfaces bring the appearance of stone and wood into constructed forms. Close observation of bark, roots and rock informs the work.
